  • HISTORY: HMS Victory was a Royal Navy ship of the line. She was built between 1759 and 1765 in Chatham, England, to Sir Thomas Slade’s designs. Today the ship can be visited in dry dock at Portsmouth, England. She is a living museum, a symbol of the Royal Navy and a memorial to the Battle of Trafalgar and Admiral Nelson. Trafalgar was the most important naval engagement of the Napoleonic Wars. On 21 October 1805, the British fleet under Admiral Horatio Nelson faced the combined Spanish and French fleet. The Napoleonic Wars had already been raging for 10 years. The battle marked a turning point, securing British naval supremacy for an entire century. It brought the ship immortality and her commander a hero’s death.
    Interesting fact: Victory approached the maximum size possible for a wooden ship. Around 6000 trees were felled to build her, ninety percent of them oak. Her guns could fire 500 kg of iron shot in a single broadside over a distance of one nautical mile. The cannonballs weighed 32, 24 or 12 pounds; 1 pound = 0.54 kg.
