  • HISTORY: Originally named Bethia, the vessel carried coal along the English coast. In 1787, the Admiralty bought her and renamed her Bounty for a new, special mission.
    In 1789, the merchant frigate was sent to Tahiti under Captain Bligh to transport breadfruit trees to the West Indies for cultivation. After leaving Tahiti, the captain’s near-cruel severity led to a mutiny headed by the young lieutenant Christian Fletcher. The captain and 18 loyal men were put into a boat without weapons on the open sea. Bligh then accomplished an extraordinary feat of seamanship: overcoming immense hardship and travelling thousands of kilometres across the Pacific, he reached Batavia and eventually returned to England. The mutineers returned to Tahiti, where some settled. Others sailed on aboard Bounty with Tahitian women and settled on the uninhabited island of Pitcairn. Their descendants still live there today.
