History of the original Vasa ship

Vasa was a richly decorated warship built for the Swedish navy in the seventeenth century. In 1628, she set out on her first voyage from Stockholm, but barely left the harbor when she capsized heavily due to a gust of wind.

Water poured into the hull through the open gun ports and Vasa sank within a short time. The narrow hull, high and heavy superstructure, heavy armament and inadequate stability all contributed to the tragedy.

After the ship sank, it spent more than three centuries on the seabed. Vasa was raised in 1961, after which a long process of restoration and conservation began. Today it can be seen in the Vasa Museum in Stockholm and is one of the best-known surviving seventeenth-century warships in the world.
