The French ship was built in 1669 based on the plans of L. Hubac in the Brest shipyard in France. All bow, side and stern decorations are attributed to Laysevox, who was a famous artist of the time. As one of Louis XIV’s largest ships, it magnificently exemplifies the fabulous wealth of the French monarch. It was equipped with 104 guns of different calibers. Painted royal blue and richly gilded, the ship was a sight to behold. It was renovated in 1689. The following year, the ship was Admiral Comte Tourville’s flagship at Bevéziers when he won a victory over the English. In 1692 he met the English again at Cape Barfleur, where he was seriously wounded. She ran aground at the anchorage in front of Cherbourg, and was then destroyed by English incendiary ships along with 11 of her companions.
