The Story of the Ship
Construction of Titanic began on 31 March 1909 and she was launched on 11 May 1911. It had a double bottom and sixteen watertight compartments. The Titanic was claimed to be unsinkable as it could stay afloat even with two flooded watertight compartments. Titanic sailed from Southampton in the south of England at noon on April 10, 1912 to arrive in New York on April 15. The world’s largest luxury liner to date hit an iceberg on its first and only voyage on April 14, 1912 (two days after departure) at 11:40 p.m. Tragedy was inevitable. A section torn off during the collision caused 300 feet of damage above the much-vaunted double bottom, flooding five watertight chambers. Titanic sank at 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912. There were more than 2,200 people on board, 1,500 of whom lost their lives, as there were unrealistically few lifeboats on board, only 20. One more row of lifeboats would have fit, but in order to make the deck more airy and leave more space for walking, the idea was abandoned. With a capacity of 1,176 people, however, even this was not used due to the inexperience and lack of knowledge of the staff. The rescue operation lasted about an hour and a half, and Titanic sank in a short two and a half hours after being brushed by the iceberg. The compartments filled with water pulled the ship’s bow towards the seabed, the hull could not withstand the load and broke in two. The Carpathia, which was sailing nearby, rushed to his aid and started rescuing the people trapped in the water and in the lifeboats around 4:00 a.m. Most of the crew and crew perished there, and Captain Smith himself sank with his ship.
