The Story of the Ship
Batavia was one of the largest ships of its time. It was classified as one of the so-called return ships. These ships transported both goods and passengers between the Netherlands and Asia. They were large, as the long journeys often lasted a whole year. And to be able to protect themselves, they were also equipped with heavy weapons.
The original ship was built in Amsterdam in 1628 by order of the Dutch East India Company. On his first voyage, under the command of Francisco Pelsaert, he was shipwrecked on a reef off the western coast of Australia. Batavia was rebuilt in 1995 in Lelysted, Holland.
The basis of the reconstruction was, of course, a shipwreck found in a coral reef off the coast of Australia, then towed to the Australian Maritime Museum, where it can still be seen today.
