Sovereign of the Seas History
Charles I ordered the construction of the Ruler of the Seas at Phineas Pett in 1634. It was launched in 1637. The ship was about a hundred years ahead of its time. According to the general opinion, it would have held its own in the Battle of Trafalgar. Its richly decorated figurehead depicts the king on horseback trampling the enemy.
It has English, Scottish, Irish and French power symbols on the front, while the back is dominated by the goddess of victory surrounded by mythological statues. There are flanked shields, helmets, musical instruments and the signs of the zodiac. Because of the rich gold decoration, the ship was only called the “Gilded Devil”. Its cost was 65,500 pounds, which was created by the introduction of a new type of tax, ship money.
Technical innovations appeared in the sail width and the rounding of the stern. It carried 11 anchors due to its size. In 1651, its superstructure was lowered, and then completely rebuilt in 1659/60. The ship was then called the Sovereign, and although it appeared in many battles, a candle signaled its end in 1703 at the Chatham docks. The candle was left burning in the petty officer’s quarters, and the ship burned down.
