The Story of Golden Hind
1577. on December 13 five galleys sailed out of Plymouth harbor in England under the command of Sir Francis Drake. The flagship’s original name was Pelican, which Drake later renamed Golden Hind in honor of Sir Christopher Hatton, one of the supporters of the expedition, whose coat of arms featured a golden doe (hind).
Golden Hind made history by being one of the first ships to circumnavigate the Earth between 1577 and 1580, a journey of some 40,000 miles. After the expedition, Drake returned to England with a huge treasure and I. Queen Elizabeth knighted herself on board the ship in 1581.
