The Story of HMS Bounty
Originally built as a cargo ship in 1783, HMS Bounty was purchased by the British Navy in 1787 to transport Tahitian breadfruit to the Caribbean—cheap food for slaves working on sugar cane plantations. On December 23, 1787, the Bounty left England under the leadership of Captain William Bligh. The long journey to Tahiti and back to the Caribbean brought many trials.
The ship’s history is most famous for the Mutiny of 1789, when the mutineers led by Fletcher Christian put Bligh and 18 loyal sailors ashore in the ship’s sloop. Bligh reached Timor with an amazing survival of 41 days and thousands of kilometers — this story is one of the best-known chapters in naval history. The fate of the Bounty and the legend of the mutiny have been the subject of many books, films and scientific studies ever since. ⚓
