The handheld extending telescope is a familiar feature of maritime stories. Beyond fictional pirates, it belongs to the history of optics and the observation of distant shores. A monocular is used with one eye; its construction and performance vary by model.

Where did the telescope come from?

In 1608, Dutch spectacle maker Hans Lipperhey submitted a patent application for an instrument for viewing distant objects. It was rejected because its construction was not considered possible to keep secret. Galileo Galilei improved the telescope in 1609 and also used it for astronomical observations.

What does magnification mean?

Magnification describes how much larger the object’s apparent angular size is compared with the naked-eye view. A higher figure does not necessarily make viewing more comfortable: hand movement and a boat’s motion can disturb the image more noticeably. For longer observations, a steady support or a tripod suitable for the model can help.

The objective lens and viewing conditions

The objective diameter affects how much light is collected, but magnification, optical quality and ambient light together influence the view. Check magnification, dimensions, focusing and intended use in the product description. Do not assume that every antique-style piece is a modern navigation instrument or a night-vision device.

A nautical gift or decorative feature

Brass-coloured finishes and wood or leather-style details evoke traditional seafaring. A telescope on a wooden stand can become a focal point in a room, while a boxed version can make a maritime gift. The photographs show items from an earlier range; check current availability in our telescope category.

Important: never look at the Sun through a telescope; serious eye damage can result.
