Buying a wooden ship model kit

Which kit should I choose?

More and more people are discovering wooden ship modelling. This guide is intended especially for anyone choosing a first kit or considering taking up the hobby. Building a model offers an opportunity to practise patience, dexterity and careful work.

For a child, choose a kit appropriate to their age and experience, following the manufacturer’s age and safety guidance. Tools may require adult supervision. A manageable first project helps a beginner enjoy the achievement of completing a small-scale ship without becoming discouraged by excessive complexity.

Prepare a well-lit table where, if possible, the work can remain until the model is finished. Basic equipment may include a craft knife, sandpaper, tweezers and suitable wood glue. Follow the instructions for the kit and tools you use.

Beginner level

Simple silhouette kits can provide an introduction to assembly and rigging. Laser-cut parts are fitted together and fixed as directed in the instructions. Building time depends on the model and the builder’s experience; a fixed completion time cannot be assumed.

Children’s kits from Artesania Latina have included boats such as Olympic 420, Viking, pirate, catamaran and Egyptian-style models. Availability may change. Check each product description for the included tools, paints and stickers.

Amati First Step and Minimamoli models offer further introductory projects. Hull construction, plan scale and the language and format of instructions vary by kit. The superstructure, sails and rigging may present additional challenges. Check whether a separate tool set is needed before ordering.

Use the individual product description and manufacturer’s difficulty rating when comparing kits. Where a star rating is provided, it can offer additional guidance; it does not replace the model-specific information.

More advanced projects

Detailed wooden ship models can require substantial time and careful assembly. Manufacturers include Amati, Artesania Latina, Victory Models, Mantua, Panart and Sergal. Check each model separately: one manufacturer’s range may contain kits for different experience levels.

Depending on complexity and the time you can devote to it, a build may take weeks, months or longer. Contents may include plans, instructions, prepared keel and frame parts, planking timber, fittings and rigging. The exact parts and instruction languages differ between models.

For a first planked hull, consider a relatively straightforward model with manageable rigging. Product and box photographs show the assembled result, but a photograph is not a complete contents list. Confirm whether sails, a stand, paint, glue and tools are supplied by reading the product description and manufacturer’s parts list.

If you need replacement strips, fittings or rigging material, ask about availability. Some plans may also be available separately. Prices, minimum quantities and availability must be confirmed for the specific item.

Tools and accessories

Depending on the model, useful specialist tools can include a plank bender, hull support, pin pusher, hand drill, drill bits, clamps, small files and sanding tools. Choose tools for the work described in the instructions rather than assuming every project needs every accessory.

Special-order model kits

If the model you want is not in stock or cannot be added to the basket, send an enquiry through our contact form. Include the product name or reference and the quantity required. We check supplier availability and provide an individual quotation with the price, payment terms, expected delivery and ordering procedure.

The advance payment is normally 30% of the purchase price; the individual quotation states the exact amount and deadline. It is credited towards the price and is not a forfeitable earnest-money payment. Full advance payment is also available. A catalogue item may have sold out or been discontinued at the supplier, so catalogue inclusion alone does not confirm availability.

Our collection point and showroom is at World Mall, west wing, first floor, corner of 5th Street at the end of the main aisle, 1152 Budapest, Szentmihályi út 167–169, Hungary. Contact us for further details.
