Ship history

The RMS Titanic was a passenger liner and one of three superliners, together with her sister ships RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic, built to secure the White Star Line’s dominance on the Atlantic.

Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland, and was the largest passenger steamship in the world.

Her designers used the most advanced technology available, and she was widely considered unsinkable.

However, on her maiden voyage, at 23:40 on Sunday, 14 April 1912, she struck an iceberg, broke in two and sank 2 hours and 40 minutes later.

The Titanic disaster was one of the worst maritime tragedies in peacetime and remains the best known. The event shocked the world because the tragedy occurred despite advanced technology and an experienced crew.
