THE SHIP’S HISTORY:
Construction of Titanic began on 31 March 1909, and she was launched on 11 May 1911. She had a double bottom and sixteen watertight compartments. Titanic was said to be unsinkable because she could remain afloat even with two watertight compartments flooded.
Titanic left Southampton in southern England at noon on 10 April 1912, intending to arrive in New York on 15 April. On her first and only voyage, the world’s largest luxury liner to date struck an iceberg at 23:40 on 14 April 1912 (two days after departure). Tragedy was inevitable. The collision tore a 300-foot-long section above the much-praised double bottom, allowing water to flood five watertight compartments.
Titanic sank at 02:20 on 15 April 1912. More than 2200 people were aboard, of whom 1500 died, as the ship carried far too few lifeboats: only 20. Another row would have fitted, but the idea was rejected to keep the deck open and leave more room for walking. Even the available capacity of 1176 people was not fully used because of the crew’s inexperience and lack of knowledge. Rescue efforts lasted around an hour and a half, and Titanic sank just two and a half hours after the iceberg scraped her side.
The flooded compartments pulled the bow towards the seabed; the hull could not withstand the strain and broke in two. The nearby Carpathia hurried to help and began rescuing people from the water and lifeboats at around 04:00. The greatest losses were among the crew and staff, and Captain Smith went down with his ship. The vessel lies at a depth of 4 km. Titanic’s wreck is 1783 km northeast of New York and 839 km southeast of Newfoundland’s coast.
