The Story of the Ship San Felipe
San Felipe – also known as El Real or Real Felipe – was named V. He got it from King Philip of Spain, who was the first ruler of the Bourbon dynasty in Spain.
Built in 1716 at the San Feliú de Gixols shipyard, the three-deck first-class warship was one of the most impressive and powerful watercraft of its time.
More than 4,000 timbers had been used to build the ship, and the finished hull was extremely strong thanks to double-bulking.
San Felipe was a formidable sight with 108 guns, a length of 67 meters and a height of 12 meters – she was the pride of the Spanish Navy due to her ornate sculptures and gilded carvings. ⚔️
She began her service in the Sardinia Campaign of 1717 under the command of D. Esteban Mari Centurione, and the following year participated in the Sicily Campaign under the command of Admiral Antonio Gaztañeta.
Unfortunately, the ship met its fate in Mahón: it was completely destroyed in a fire and explosion. ⚓
