History of the N.S. Mercedes Frigate
The frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes was built in 1788 in Havana for the Royal Spanish Navy. The ship was equipped with 34 cannons and transported, among other things, gold, silver, copper, tin, wool, and cinnamon from South America to Spain.
On October 5, 1804, during the Battle of Cabo de Santa María, during an attack by the English fleet, a cannonball hit the ship’s gunpowder store, causing an explosion and immediate sinking. More than 250 people lost their lives and the treasures on board also went to the bottom of the sea. ⚓
The wreck was discovered in 2007 by Odyssey Marine Exploration in the Gulf of Cádiz, at a depth of about 1,100 meters. With the help of a modern underwater robot, more than 500,000 silver and gold coins have been brought to the surface — the largest discovered sea treasure in the world! Today, pieces of the treasure can be seen in the National Archaeological Museum of Cartagena.
