• PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: a two-mirror protractor used for navigation, which can be used to measure the position of celestial bodies relative to each other or the horizon. It is mainly used to measure the height of the Sun above the horizon and to determine latitude. The double-mirror measurement was first used in a marine instrument by Hadley in 1731 in his octane. Today’s sextants are perfected versions of this. The accuracy of the measurement is made possible by seeing the reflected image and the seen image (e.g. the horizon and the Sun) in the same field. Filters can be placed in front of the sun. For land use, an artificial horizon given by a mercury pool is used, while in flight, a bubble level horizon is used.
