Ship history

Originally named Bethia, the vessel carried coal along the English coast. In 1787, the Admiralty purchased her and renamed her Bounty for a special mission. In 1789, the merchant frigate was sent to Tahiti under Captain Bligh to collect breadfruit trees for cultivation in the West Indies. After leaving Tahiti, the captain’s almost cruel severity provoked a mutiny led by the young lieutenant Fletcher Christian. Bligh and 18 loyal men were put into an open boat, unarmed, on the high seas. Bligh then accomplished an extraordinary feat of seamanship: despite immense hardship, he travelled thousands of kilometres across the Pacific to Batavia and eventually returned to England. The mutineers returned to Tahiti, where some settled. Others sailed on aboard Bounty with Tahitian women and settled on the uninhabited island of Pitcairn. Their descendants still live there today.

The kit includes a precut keel and frames, double hull planking, deck planking, decorative parts, photo-etched details, sailcloth, flags, a detailed instruction booklet and plans.
