The Story of the Ship

Lord, save us from the wrath of the Vikings! From the beginning of the 8th century, strangely shaped ships appeared on the northern coasts of Europe. Everyone was afraid of the pirates of the cold north, the Normans, or the Vikings as they are known. At the turn of the seventh and eighth centuries, the population increased explosively, and because of this, the Vikings got on ships and plundered the coasts of foreign countries. Often entire cities were burned. They ventured farther and farther with their fast ships.

The northern robbers roamed the seas for nearly three hundred years. Their homeland was in today’s Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark).

The construction of ships began with a keel carved from a single log, to which was attached a bow and stern of two or three parts, which curved strongly upward, and the ends were usually bent or decorated with carved animal heads.

Separate places were created on the ship’s deck for the watchman and the flag bearer, the gun chest and the dignitaries, oarsmen and commoners. The chief of staff and the helmsman stayed on the short stern deck (bulwark). Ships, like their most prized possessions, were cherished and loved for their beauty and strength, and they were proud of them.

Owning a good ship meant authority in the eyes of the Vikings, so they tried to build bigger and more beautiful ships.
