The Story of the Original Cutty Sark

Cutty Sark is one of the most famous clipper ships in the world. She was launched on 23 November 1869 in Scotland. The ship was built to the order of Jock Willis based on the designs of Hercules Linton.

It is named after Scottish poet Robert Burns Tam o’ Shanter. One of the characters in the story wears a short piece of clothing called a “Cutty Sark” – hence the ship’s special name.

In the nineteenth century, clippers were mainly used for fast transport of goods. The Cutty Sark was specifically designed to gain an advantage with her speed in the highly profitable tea trade between China and Great Britain.

There was a serious competition between the tea ships to see which one would be the first to arrive in London with the first shipment of tea of the new season. Speed therefore meant not only prestige, but also a significant economic advantage.

Records in the Australian Wool Trade

With the opening of the Suez Canal, steamships gained an increasing advantage, so the Cutty Sark later found a new role in the transport of Australian wool.

It was during this period that he became truly legendary. In 1883, he completed the Sydney-London route in 82 days, and in 1885 he improved this to 73 days. The speed of the ship was helped by its narrow, streamlined hull and huge sail area.

After a long period of service, British naval officer Wilfred Dowman bought and restored the ship in 1922. It later operated as a training ship, and in 1954 it was permanently located in Greenwich.

In 2007, the ship suffered a major fire during restoration, but Cutty Sark was restored and reopened to the public in 2012.
