• Ship history: This typical Roman ship appeared in the 1st century BC.  In those days, the Roman power ruled more than 60 percent of the Mediterranean Sea.. The strong, robust but graceful deck, spacious keelbased wooden hull, planked and closed deck. All this made it possible to increase the own weight (thus the useful weight). The ship was not large, but the strict discipline and organization resulted in a very effective fighting force.  The tail support usually imitated the neck and head of a swan. The ship’s hull was double-ended, so it was unpredictable on the battlefield, because it could navigate in any direction at any time. Apart from the galleys, the ships were supported by only one mast with a square sail, plus, in favorable winds, the sail hoisted on the bow mast helped the progress. The bud-sail was used to hoist the senate flag.
