Bluenose was built in Canada in 1921. She measured 43.6 metres in length, with a beam of 8.2 metres, a draught of 4.8 metres and a displacement of 285 tons.
The Halifax Herald’s International Trophy races took place in October, after the fishing season, and rivalled the America’s Cup. The fishing schooner led a double life. “Bluenose” was a nickname for the people of Nova Scotia. She easily won the trophy on her first attempt and again in 1922, 1930 and 1937. In 1942, she was sold to the West Indies Trading Company. She was wrecked off Haiti in 1946. The government of Nova Scotia commissioned an exact replica, Bluenose II, in 1963 and still sails today.
