- The Story of the Ar-Men Lighthouse:
Ar-Men is the most rugged lighthouse in France, off the coast of Brittany, at Raz de Sein (48°03.3N – 4°59.9W). Guards working in an isolated tower built on a cliff besieged by wild waves referred to their service as hell. The shifts were often missed due to the stormy weather, and the pictures also fell from the walls due to the force of the waves. In the 1880s, the workers still worked in life jackets and with ropes! It was automated in 1990 and has been uninhabited since then. Its most famous keeper was Jean-Pierre Abraham, who recorded his experiences in the form of a diary. - Amazing sequences of the Ar-Men can be seen at the beginning of Jean-René Keruzoré’s 2007 video showing the lighthouses battling the storms of the Raz de Sein.
