History of Roter Sand Lighthouse
The original Roter Sand Lighthouse was built in 1885 in the North Sea, about 30 nautical miles off the German coast. The lighthouse stands in an extremely difficult environment, where constantly moving sandbars and strong storms posed a serious challenge to the builders.
Its light went out for good in 1986, and then it was restored in 1987. Today, it is under the care of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz, it has been open to visitors since 1999, and even offers the possibility of an overnight stay as a special experience.
