Ship history
Pinta was a 60-ton caravel of the type used in the 15th and 16th centuries. She had three masts, with square sails on the foremast and mainmast and a lateen sail on the mizzenmast, as well as a sterncastle. Such ships were used for coastal voyages and fishing.
Pinta was one of the three ships in Columbus’s fleet, which set out to reach India by sailing around the world. After damage near the Canary Islands, her lateen rig was converted to a nao-style rig. From her masthead, at 2 a.m. on 11 October 1492, after 35 days at sea, the sailor Rodrigo de Triana was the first to sight land. By morning, they lay off an island that Columbus named San Salvador.
