Dragon
THE HISTORY OF THE SHIP
The Dragon boat class has been present in the history of sailing since 1929. A tender was issued for the plans of an easy-to-use, capital-intensive sport yacht, with which the young people of Scandinavia can take a liking to this beautiful sport. The winner of the competition was the Norwegian ship designer Johan Anker with Dragon.
Due to its size alone, the small cruiser that can be built on a low budget, is relatively easy to transport, is made according to uniform plans, is suitable for both touring and racing, and quickly became popular among sailors around the world. The fact that the international association (IYRU, International Yacht Racing Union) recognized it as an Olympic class from 1948 gave a lot of impetus to the matter. That’s when the Dragons, which were basically made for competition, appeared, and the uniform class regulations were clarified.
It didn’t take thirty years and in 1955 we already had units ready for Lake Balaton. Then the domestic Dragon fleet was built one by one: the Triton (1955), the Firefly, the Ciróka, the Muci, the Öregúr, the Mackó, the Megellán and others. The Dragon, like the little Fifty, became popular on Lake Balaton.
After ships that were built only of wood for a long time, more modern construction materials appeared worldwide. In Hungary, in the 90s, Géza Soponyai started dealing with plastic-built Dragons. Five units were completed here. And in 2003, the Conseuro workshop appeared with boats with plastic hulls.
Within the Hungarian Sailing Association, the Hungarian Dragon Association represents the fleet, which has nearly fifty members on Lake Balaton. About thirty of them compete regularly.
