Ship history

In 1940, Achille Castoldi set a new speed record of 81.10 mph in the 400 kg class with his boat Arno. In 1953, he decided to attempt the outright record and commissioned a three-hulled hydroplane for the 800 kg class.

He entrusted the engine to the rising racing-car builder Enzo Ferrari. Ferrari supplied a 375 V12 Grand Prix engine of 4,493.7 cc and 385 hp, driving the two-bladed propeller at 10,000 rpm. During an unofficial trial at Campione d’Italia in January 1953, Castoldi’s Arno IX exceeded 124 mph and also broke the two-run record. His rival Mario Verga then raised the record to 125.68 mph and, two weeks later, to 140.74 mph. Castoldi did not give up. He fitted Arno IX with a new 4.5-litre, 600 hp, twin-supercharged methanol engine. Ferrari also sent his chief engineer, Stefano Meazza, to help prepare the boat.

On the morning of 15 October 1953, Achille Castoldi set a new two-run speed record of 150.49 mph in the 800 kg class. He retired from racing in 1954 and sold the boat to Nando del Orto, who made minor modifications and continued racing for years. His best result was second place at the 1965 World Championship in the 900 kg class.

The kit includes a laser-cut wooden structure, double planking in plywood and mahogany, a preformed fairing and stern fin, a steel dashboard and detail parts, and a resin exhaust system and rudder.
